Senator Hutchinson Says Governor’s Pay Raises Send the Wrong Message
OLYMPIA FIELDS—Apparently the best way to make it through the tough economy is to get a job with Governor Quinn.
Recent reports have shown that the Governor has given out over 40 pay increases over the last 15 months to people who are already making nearly $100,000 a year. This information comes to light only days after the Governor announced he would be cutting $1.4 billion from the budget.
Senator Toi Hutchinson (D-Olympia Fields) agrees that cuts need to be made, but does not believe that pay increases is the best way for the state to rein in spending.
“I do not think this is the right thing to do while education, human services, and public safety are being cut,” Hutchinson said. “The state needs to tighten its belt so we can pay our bills and protect the funding going to vital services.”
Hutchinson indicated that with unemployment hovering over 10% in her community, the Governor is sending the wrong message to people that are struggling to make ends meet.
“The state has to do a better job of prioritizing our already limited resources, and giving out raises is not the best way to do this,” Hutchinson added. “I think the timing of this was unfortunate.”
Hutchinson also pointed out that she voted for 12 unpaid workdays, a decrease in mileage and per diems, and gave back all of her special session per diem checks last year to do her part in these difficult economic times.
“We are all trying to share the sacrifice right now, and executive level staff should as well,” she concluded.
